Introduction
The domain of Electrical Engineering technology is extensive
and covers both basic research and technology applications,
so the courses of the department have to be well designed
with the times. We usually provide basic courses for the prior-year
students of undergraduate school, and courses and research
programs with prospective and international views for students
of the junior, senior and graduate school, in order to train
students to cope with their future job and academic research.
Presently the department is divided into four teaching and
research groups, Electronics, Solid State Device, Control
System, and Communication groups. To promote the electrical
engineering technology of the country, the faculty and graduate
students of the EE department all actively strive to execute
variant research programs.
Besides publishing research achievements on academic journals,
we also provide perfect research environments such as research
labs, instruments, computers, and related hardware to train
students to have the ability to do research independently.
We expect that students who graduate from the department not
only with the trend but also can establish a milestone in
the rapid developing high-technology industry and academic
fields in their future.
Illustration of current situation
(I) The Curriculum¡G
In recent years, the Ministry of Education gradually
releases the control of undergraduate curriculum. Seeing that
old, rigid and incoherent undergraduate curriculum had made
students unable to gain systematic understanding and independent
thinking, we decided to process a new curriculum in 1995.
We decreased the obligatory core courses and increased selective
ones, but credits for graduating were not changed. Now there
are four types of courses, Electronics, Solid State Devices,
Control System, and Communication. Students can cover, at
least, two types of courses and take selective courses to
promote their professional knowledge at the same time. Some
regulations have been also made to help courses and laboratory
courses cooperate well.
(II) The Equipment¡G
Due to the rapid growing of technology knowledge, we
get additional programmable Digital Signal Processor Lab,
Molecule Beam Epitaxy Lab, Photoelectric Device Measurement
Lab, Speech Recognition Lab, Wireless Communication Lab, High
Speed Network Lab, and Signal Processing Lab to let faculty
and students have good study environment. Seeing that the
basic laboratory courses are important, we renew all equipment
of basic laboratories such as Control Research Lab, Microprocessor
Lab, and Communication Lab gradually in recent two years to
make lab-teaching materials conform to the needs of the times.
(III) Talent Cultivation¡G
In the undergraduate, the Special Topics of research
courses is emphasized to train students¡¦ abilities to organize,
research, resolve and implement problems and investigations.
In the graduate, both thesis research and basic courses are
stressed.Once registering, graduate students have to start
to participate in seminars. We expect every graduate student
to have sufficient abilities to do researches independently.
(IV) Practical Courses¡G
In the nine professional curricula offered by the university,
we offer three, " Network Communication ", "
Semiconductor ", and " Materials ". We provide
students not just the opportunities of learning professional
knowledge but abilities to get a job in the future.
(V) Resources Sharing¡G
We have cooperated researching and teaching with related
organizations in recent years. For example, we have established
an intimate relationship with the computer science and information
engineering department and worked reciprocally in equipment,
curriculum, and administration on the basis of professional
specialties. And we also co-established Molecule Beam Epitaxy
Lab of related research fields with the Optical Sciences Center
of the university.
We also carry out integrated research projects with the Center
For Space and Remote Sensing Research of the university. In
the assistance of National Security Bureau, we establish the
cross-field Forward-looking Communication Lab, responsible
for every research on advance communication and networks.Outside
the campus, the local Telephone and Telegraph Office is always
our cooperative partner. The interaction with ITRI (Industrial
Technology Research Institute) and other enterprises is also
remarkably growing in recent two years and will be focally
continued.
(VI) Current Situation¡G
1. Research :
The above form shows that the numbers of publishing
theses, research projects, and persons awarded prizes by National
Science Council are growing year by year in the department.
And we have16 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 assistant
professor, and 2 lecturers, and 22 of them are full-time.
It obviously shows the achievement of our teachers who devote
themselves to researches.
2.Teaching :
(1) The Ratio of faculty to students
(2) Tutor System
We encourage faculty to be as tutors for students, and, also
according to the rules, each tutor in the university is supposed
to assist 20 students. We assign the same tutor for one-class
students through their undergraduate days to make the assistance
coherent, promote the teaching quality, and help students
solve problems.
(3) Curriculum Identification System
The Student Association and we provide curriculum and course
evaluation for students in the middle and the end of the semester.
The evaluation can be the reference for teachers of teaching.
3. Service:
(1) Education Spreading
To follow the Ministry of Education¡¦s policy, we offer a summer
program of advanced courses of 40 credits for teachers of
senior high schools and senior technology schools to promote
the teachers¡¦ teaching quality. It has lasted for many years
and also won much appreciation
(2) Contact with Alumni
For years, our alumni either continue their education or get
their occupations domestically or abroad. Their changeable
addresses make contacting quite difficult. In recent two years,
under the efforts of the EE Department the contact line has
been enhanced and built.
Future Goals and Strategies
(I)
Teaching¡G
1. Present plans of recruiting teachers for the department
is listed below:
Electronics Group: VLSI System
and Structure; Analog (or Mixed Signal) IC and System
Solid State Group: New Material
/ New Domain Electronic Devices
Control System: Microcomputer
Control Electrical Machine Life Technology
Communication Group: Electrical
Wave Engineering; Networks
The plan is designed to cover the lack of teachers in specialties.
It considers the future trend of the whole environment of
Electrical Engineering.
2. To get talented students, the entrance of undergraduate
and graduate schools is widely open. Besides strictly professional
training, students are also encouraged to broaden their knowledge
and to think independently. To maintain teaching and learning
quality, two classes for each year in the undergraduate school
is kept and the numbers of graduate students is also appropriately
increased. The ratio of graduate students to faculty is aimed
at 2:1.
3. Besides the basic and important obligatory courses, to
encourage students to take courses of different fields, we
give students more freedom to choose the selective courses
they like, but with a suitable guidance and assistance.
4. In order to know the interaction between faculty and students
in class or after class well, we regularly do teaching evaluation
for each course that functions as teaching references for
faculty. Meanwhile, we also hold seminars for students and
faculty to help each other¡¦s communication and understanding.
(II) Research¡G
1. Besides faculty's personal projects, we also encourage
faculty to engage integrated research cooperating with groups
of different fields. Meanwhile, besides fixing projects of
National Science Council (NSC) year by year, we strive for
more teaching cooperation opportunities with other researching
organizations and industrial circles to reach the goal that
the ratio of NSC projects to teaching cooperation cases is
2:1.
2. Basing upon the principle of sharing resources, we make
great efforts to gain more resources from other associations
for faculty's integrated projects. We also subsidize faculty
who is in charge of the projects.
(III) Academic Activities¡G
1. To localize the technology knowledge and to improve
our faculty¡¦s professional knowledge, we encourage the academic
interaction, proceeded by exchanging interviews, cooperative
researches and holding seminars, for examples. Especially,
faculty is supported to hold seminars in the university.
2. Besides studying in class, students have practical opportunities
to get working experiences in famous industrial companies.
At the same time, we often invite experts of industrial circles
to introduce the movement of technology and industry.
3. To train undergraduate students the ability of real practicing
projects, we hold achievement competitions and exhibit their
works in public.
(IV) Services¡G
1. Since every university has to raise fund by itself
and the industrial circles' urgent needs of professionals
, we assist to hold various spreading education, including
the proceeding summer credits program for senior technological
teachers and adaptive professional training programs for social
people.
2. We continuously hold the EE summer camp for senior high
school students and update the teaching materials.
3. We help the university to advertise and enroll senior high
school students.
4. We update the introduction and the information of the EE
department network web side .
Conclusion
We have been incessantly learning and growing since
the department was established. A good foundation has been
well constructed in all aspects, faculty¡¦s quality, equipment,
directions of researches, and administrative assistance, for
examples. In recent years, we have successfully integrated
resources with researches, connected with other research units
and industries, and gained many teaching cooperative cases.
Basing on the fulfillment, we will continue to strive for
more excellent achievements. Besides, since the Electrical
Engineering / Computer Science and Information Engineering
College was established in 1997, to cooperate with the integrated
plan of the college and to well process the manpower, equipment,
and space in our institute have become our first goal.
