Physically, the Laplace Kernel gives rise to short range interaction whereas the Helmholtz kernel yields long range interaction. Consequently, a vast amount of information can be carried by electromagnetic waves. For instance, we can see the craters on the surface of the moon using optical signals, but we cannot delineate of the moon if we have only the knowledge of the gravitational field of the moon-which is a static field ~ Weng  Cho Chew
